This certainly looks like a professionally prepared document to us. At first glance there is nothing odd or suspicious. Still, we’d better take a closer look. This could be a Fraud.

Because our correspondent put so much effort into their work and because blue is the color of our fingers here in Canada, we shall alter out normal format just a bit.

 Attn: Winner,

We happily announce to you the draw of Canadian National Lottery the UK/CANADA online Sweepstakes International program held on  Sat, February 5, 2011.

Unfortunately, there is no Canadian National Lottery, neither is there a UK/CANADA Sweepstakes International program.  There is an official Ontario Lottery. They are very clear on their policies regarding email notifications

You have won USD$1,000,000.00 (One Million United States Dollars Only) from Canadian lottery draw 2011.

The Ontario Lottery pays in Canadian dollars, which make sense as they are in Canada.

Your Email ID was one of the selected emails all over the world in the lottery draw and it comes out one of the lucky winning number.

As we noted above, the official lottery does not send unsolicited email notifications.

For us to process your winning for transfer you are advice to contact our judiciary agent with the details below in London for your payment.

The only way to collect winnings in the official lottery is to present a winning ticket. We do not have one to present. We quote from their website; “Bring your original signed ticket”. They can’t be any clearer than that. They do not mention having to travel to London at all.

The Ontario Lottery would most likely use their own email not gmail. They seem like a big enough concern. Even the cat has a HowToSpotAFraud.com email address and we operate with nearly no budget at all.

This seems much more complicated than “”Bring your original signed ticket” doesn’t it?

Congratulations!! Once again.

We present the following from the Ontario Lottery page:

Fraud Indicators

  • You did not buy a ticket.
  • You have never heard of the lottery game.
  • You did not register your name, address, email address, phone number, and a credit card before you were allowed to buy a ticket on an online lottery web site.
  • You do not live in the country and you are not a citizen of the country of that lottery.
  • You are asked to pay money up front for fees or taxes in order to release your “win.”
  • You are told you must reply within a given time or the money will be given to someone else

So far we can answer “Yes’ to items one through four. We suspect that before we went too much further we would be able to answer “Yes” to numbers five and six.

Should you receive this or a similar email, take a deep breath, relax and come to grips with the fact that you have won nothing. This is a Fraud.

Join us tomorrow for “Embassy Embarrassment” here at HowToSpotAFraud.com.

That it all.
